Average Global Temperature Expected to Reach 1.5 Degrees

Geneva: There is a 50 percent chance of the annual average global temperature temporarily reaching 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial level for at least one of the next five years and the likelihood is increasing with time, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) report said.

“We are getting measurably closer to temporarily reaching the lower target of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.

“The 1.5 degrees Celsius figure is not some random statistic. It is rather an indicator of the point at which climate impacts will become increasingly harmful for people and indeed the entire planet,” he noted.

Taalas warned that as long as countries continue to emit greenhouse gases, temperatures will continue to rise. The oceans will continue to become warmer and more acidic, sea ice and glaciers will continue to melt, sea level will continue to rise and our weather will become more extreme. Arctic warming is disproportionately high and what happens in the Arctic affects all of us, he added.

According to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, there is a 93 percent likelihood of the five-year average for 2022-2026 being higher than the last five years (2017-2021), replacing 2016 to become the warmest year on record.

WMO said the chance of temporarily exceeding 1.5 degrees Celsius has risen steadily since 2015 when it was close to zero. This probability was 10 percent in the years from 2017 to 2021 and increased to nearly 50 percent in the 2022-2026 period.

Regarding the effects of climate change, the Paris Agreement has long-term goals to guide all nations to substantially reduce global greenhouse gas emissions to limit the global temperature increase in this century to 2 degrees Celsius while pursuing efforts to limit the increase even further to 1.5 degrees Celsius.

وأضاف تالاس “ما دامت انبعاثاتنا من غازات الاحتباس الحراري مستمرة، فستواصل درجات الحرارة الارتفاع، وستصبح محيطاتنا أكثر دفئا وأكثر حمضية، وسيستمر الجليد البحري والأنهار الجليدية في الذوبان، وسيواصل مستوى سطح البحر الارتفاع، وسيصبح طقسنا أكثر تطرفا، ويتزايد بموازاة ذلك احترار المنطقة القطبية الشمالية بشكل غير متناسب، وما يحدث في المنطقة القطبية الشمالية يؤثر فينا جميعا”.

وأظهرت نتائج التحديث العالمي للمناخ الصادر عن المنظمة العالمية للأرصاد الجوية أن ثمة احتمالا أيضا بنسبة 93 بالمئة أن يتجاوز متوسط درجة الحرارة للسنوات الخمس المقبلة متوسط السنوات الخمس الماضية.

يشار إلى أن اتفاق باريس حدد أهدافا طويلة الأجل، لتوجيه جميع البلدان للحد بشكل كبير من انبعاثات غازات الاحتباس الحراري العالمية لقصر زيادة درجة الحرارة العالمية في هذا القرن على درجتين مئويتين، ومواصلة الجهود الرامية إلى إبقاء هذه الزيادة في حدود 1.5 درجة مئوية.
