Venice Film Fest to screen 10 films supported by DFI

As many as 10 films, all recipients of the Doha Film Institute (DFI) Grants Programme, have been selected to screen to an audience of film critics, industry professionals and visitors at the prestigious Venice International Film Festival (VIFF) and parallel sections; the International Critics’ Week and the Giornate degli Autori which opened yesterday.

“Ten bold films with powerful themes that reflect gritty stories of the region, and supported by our Grants programme, have headed to Venice, where they have the opportunity to gain international interest and recognition,” DFI CEO Fatma al-Remaihi said.

“Our Grants programme is central to our commitment to nurturing emerging talents, and we are delighted that the works of 10 filmmakers in different stages of production are heading to Venice. We will continue to focus on strengthening the capability of aspiring talents locally and across the region,” she added.

Two films are in the Orizzonti segment, an international competition dedicated to films that represent the latest aesthetic and expressive trends in global cinema, and two in Venice Days, a series of films independently promoted by the Italian Filmmakers Association (ANC) and by the 100 Autori Association.

In the Orizzonti category are: The Day I Lost My Shadow (Syria, Lebanon, Qatar) by Soudade Kaadan, about Sana, a young mother struggling to raise her child in war-torn Syria in 2012; and Unremember (Brazil, France, Qatar) by Flavia Castro, about Joana, a 15-year-old who feeds her soul with literature and rock.

In Venice Days is Screwdriver (Palestine, US, Qatar) by Bassam Jarbawi, which presents the life of Ziad, the star of the Jalazon Refugee Camp basketball team in Palestine.

For the first time in 10 years, one documentary is among the three finalists competing for the Lux Film Prize. Directed by Mila Turajlic, The Other Side of Everything (Serbia, France, Qatar), is a feature documentary about an apartment in Belgrade that turns a family chronicle into a portrait of a country in political turmoil, which premiered at last year’s IDFA, where it won the IDFA Award for Best Feature-Length documentary.

Underlining the strong international inroads being made by films supported by the DFI, the selection includes three films to be screened in the International Critics’ Week segment, which features a series of debut-works that are independently organised by a commission appointed by the National Syndicate of Italian Film Critics.

The films chosen to the International Critics’ Week are: A Kasha (Sudan, South Africa, Germany, Qatar) by Hajooj Kuka, nurtured at DFI’s annual industry event Qumra in 2018; Still Recording (Syria, Lebanon, France, Qatar), a 2017 Qumra project and feature documentary by Saeed al-Batal and Ghiath Ayoub; and You Have the Night (Montenegro, Serbia, Qatar) by Ivan Salatic, about Sanja.

Three films are in the Venice Production Bridge, which focuses on the presentation and exchange of original projects for films and works in progress.

Selected at the Venice Gap Financing Market are: All This Victory (Lebanon, France, Germany, Qatar) by Ahmad Ghossein; and the 2017 Qumra project The Unknown Saint (Morocco, France, Qatar) by Alaa Eddine Aljem.

Haifa Street (Iraq, Qatar) by Mohanad Hayal has been chosen to the Final Cut category that aims to provide concrete assistance in the completion of films from all African nations and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Syria. The 75th VIFF, organised by La Biennale di Venezia, is officially recognised by the International Federation of Film Producers Association. The aim of the festival, running until September 8, is to raise awareness and promote international cinema in all its forms as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and dialogue.

The festival also organises retrospectives and tributes to major figures as a contribution towards a better understanding of the history of cinema.

يعرض مهرجان البندقية السينمائي الدولي في دورته الخامسة والسبعين التي تقام من 29 أغسطس إلى 8 سبتمبر، وكذلك في قسم أسبوع النقاد الدولي الموازي للمهرجان، مجموعة من 10 أفلام مميزة حصلت على دعم من برنامج المنح بمؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام. وستعرض هذه الأفلام أمام النقاد السينمائيين والعاملين في القطاع السينمائي، وكذلك أمام زوار المهرجان المرموق.

في هذا الإطار، قالت فاطمة الرميحي، الرئيس التنفيذي لمؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام: «يشهد مهرجان البندقية السينمائي الدولي عرض 10 أفلام تعكس قضايا متنوعة من المنطقة. وقد حصلت هذه الأفلام على دعم من برنامج المنح بالمؤسسة حيث يعتبر برنامج المنح من الركائز الرئيسية لمهمتنا ويعكس التزامنا بتعزيز ودعم المواهب الناشئة. ومن جهتنا سنواصل التركيز على تعزيز قدرات المواهب الواعدة، سواء من قطر أو من المنطقة».

من بين هذه الأفلام يعرض فيلمان في قسم «آفاق»، وهو المسابقة الدولية المخصصة للأفلام التي تمثل آخر التوجهات والنزعات التعبيرية في السينما العالمية، وفيلمان في قسم «أيام البندقية» الذي يعرض الأفلام التي تروج لها بشكل مستقل جمعية صناع الأفلام الإيطاليين وجمعية الـ 100 كاتب. في قسم آفاق تعرض الأفلام «عندما أضعت ظلي» (سوريا، لبنان، قطر) لسعاد كعدان، ويدور حول الأم الشابة سنا التي تصارع لتربية ابنها في سوريا التي مزقتها الحرب في عام 2012. أما فيلم «لا تتذكر» (البرازيل، فرنسا، قطر) من إخراج فلافيا كاسترو، فيدور حول جوانا صاحبة 15 عاماً التي تغذي روحها بالأدب والموسيقى.

في قسم «أيام البندقية» يعرض فيلم «مفك» (فلسطين، الولايات المتحدة، قطر) للمخرج بسام جرباوي، ويجسد حياة زياد نجم فريق كرة السلة بمخيم الجلزون في فلسطين. وللمرة الأولى في 10 أعوام، ينجح فيلم وثائقي في حجز مكانه من بين ثلاثة أفلام وصلت للنهائي لتنافس على جائزة «لوكس فيلم». «الجانب الآخر من كل شيء» للمخرج ميلا تورايليتس (صربيا، فرنسا، قطر) وثائقي طويل حول شقة في العاصمة بلجراد تحول حياة أسرة إلى لوحة تجسّد الاضطراب السياسي في البلاد.

وتأكيداً على النجاحات الدولية القوية التي حققتها الأفلام المدعومة من مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام، تتضمن القائمة ثلاثة أفلام تعرض في قسم أسبوع النقاد الدوليين الذي يضم مجموعة من العروض الأولى لأفلام تختارها لجنة معينة من الجمعية الوطنية لنقاد الأفلام الإيطاليين.

والأفلام التي ستعرض في قسم أسبوع النقاد الدوليين هي: «آكاشا» (السودان، جنوب إفريقيا، ألمانيا، قطر) للمخرج حجوج كوكا، وهو فيلم حظي بالتوجيه والإشراف في ملتقى «قمرة السينمائي» السنوي الذي تنظمه مؤسسة الدوحة للأفلام. يدور الفيلم حول بطل الحرب الثوري عدنان المولع بالقتال وببندقيته الكلاشينكوف (AK-47)، ولم يكن يضارع شغفه هذا سوى ولعه بلينا محبوبته، التي تجرعت المعاناة لفترة طويلة. فيلم «لسا عم تسجل» (سوريا، لبنان، فرنسا، قطر) فيلم وثائقي طويل حظي بالتوجيه والإشراف في ملتقى «قمرة السينمائي»، من إخراج سعيد البطل، وغيث أيوب، ويتتبع طالبي فنون يقرران مغادرة دمشق إلى دوما التي يسيطر عليها الثوار، وفيلم «الليل ملكك» (الجبل الأسود، صربيا، قطر) للمخرج إيفان سالاتيتش، ويدور حول سانيا التي تجد نفسها محاصرة بعد فقدانها وظيفتها كمضيفة على متن سفينة. وتشهد هذه الأفلام الثلاثة عروضها العالمية الأولى في مهرجان البندقية في هذا العام.

كما تعرض ثلاثة أفلام في قسم «جسر الإنتاج» الذي يركز على التعريف بالمشاريع وتبادل الأفكار حول الأفلام قيد الإنجاز. واختير في سوق التمويل الأفلام التالية: «في حدا هون؟» (لبنان، فرنسا، ألمانيا، قطر) من إخراج أحمد غصين، ويدور حول خمسة أشخاص يحاولون الهرب من القصف في قرية صغيرة بجنوب لبنان، وفيلم «القديس المجهول» (المغرب، فرنسا، قطر) للمخرج علاء الدين الجم. حظي الفيلم بالتوجيه والإشراف في ملتقى «قمرة السينمائي» 2017، أما فيلم «شارع هيفاء» (العراق، قطر) للمخرج محمد هيال، فقد اختير في فئة «المونتاج النهائي» التي تهدف إلى تقديم المساعدة لإنجاز الأفلام من مختلف الدول الإفريقية، وكذلك من العراق، ولبنان، والأردن، ولبنان، وفلسطين، وسوريا. ويوثق الفيلم حادثة حزينة في شارع هيفاء الذي يعد واحداً من أخطر المواقع خلال الحرب الأهلية في بغداد في عام 2006.;
