Qatar World Cup combines the two Korean rivals in a historic showdown

North Korea and South Korea will face Tuesday’s 2022 World Cup qualifiers in a historic match because they are the first to be held in Pyongyang.
The two Koreas play in Group H in the Asian joint qualifiers for the Qatar 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Asian Cup in China, along with Lebanon, Turkmenistan and Sri Lanka.
Forty-eight hours before the match began at Kim Il Sole Stadium in the North Korean capital, many doubts surround the match, which the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) described as “one of the most awaited matches”.
North Korea has refused to communicate directly with South Korea over the match, which is part of the second phase of the Asian qualifiers.
The only contact between the two Koreas in this regard was through the AFC.
It is not known whether the match will be broadcast live, and whether South Korean fans will be able to attend.
“We have raised these questions to the North through various channels but we have not yet received an answer,” South Korea’s Unification Ministry spokesman said on Friday. “We see this as disappointing.”
The French news agency AFP also told FIFA it was in “constant” contact with both countries.
Under the AFC regulations, the South Korean national anthem and the South Korean flag are supposed to be played before the game, which are very rare in the North.
For decades, North Korea has refused to host matches between the two Koreas, preferring to hold them in China.
The first inter-Korean friendly, held in 1990, was aimed at promoting the idea of reunification of the peninsula. The two teams then raised a flag symbolizing unity and a map of the entire peninsula.
But the first encounter in an actual match in North Korea took place in 2017 in the Women’s World Cup qualifiers.
Experts on the Korean issue do not expect the match to lead to a breakthrough in inter-Korean relations.
The hostilities between North and South Korea (1950-1953) ended with a ceasefire and not a peace treaty. The armies of the two countries are still facing each other on either side of the demilitarized zone dividing the Korean peninsula.

وقبل 48 ساعة من انطلاق المباراة في ملعب كيم إيل سول بعاصمة كوريا الشمالية، تحيط العديد من الشكوك بهذه المباراة التي وصفها الاتحاد الآسيوي لكرة القدم بأنها “واحدة من أكثر اللقاءات انتظارا”.
ورفضت كوريا الشمالية التواصل مباشرة مع جارتها الجنوبية بشأن تنظيم هذه المباراة التي تأتي ضمن المرحلة الثانية للتصفيات الآسيوية.
والتواصل الوحيد بين الكوريتين بهذا الصدد تم بواسطة الاتحاد الآسيوي لكرة القدم.
ومن غير المعروف ما إذا كانت هذه المباراة ستنقل مباشرة، وما إذا سيتمكن المشجعون الكوريون الجنوبيون من حضورها.
وأعلن أمس الأول الجمعة المتحدث باسم وزارة الوحدة الكورية الجنوبية “طرحنا هذه التساؤلات على الشمال عبر قنوات مختلفة لكننا لم نحصل بعد على جواب”، مضيفا “نرى أن ذلك مخيب للآمال”.
ونقلت وكالة الصحافة الفرنسية بدوره الاتحاد الدولي لكرة القدم “الفيفا” إنه على تواصل “مستمر” مع كلا البلدين.
وبموجب القواعد التنظيمية للاتحاد الآسيوي لكرة القدم، من المفترض أن تتم تأدية النشيد الوطني الكوري الجنوبي ورفع العلم الكوري الجنوبي قبل المباراة، وهما أمران يندر جدا حصولهما في الشمال.
وعلى مدى عقود، رفضت كوريا الشمالية أن تستقبل على أراضيها مباريات تجمع الكوريتين، مفضلة عقدها في الصين.
وأول مباراة ودية بين الكوريتين أجريت في عام 1990 وهدفت لتعزيز فكرة إعادة توحيد شبه الجزيرة. ورفع المنتخبان حينها علما يرمز للوحدة وعليه خريطة لشبه الجزيرة كاملة.
لكن أول لقاء في مباراة فعلية في كوريا الشمالية تم في عام 2017 في تصفيات كأس العالم للسيدات.
ولا يتوقع الخبراء في الملف الكوري أن تؤدي هذه المباراة إلى انفراج في العلاقات بين الكوريتين.
يذكر أن الأعمال القتالية بين كوريا الشمالية وكوريا الجنوبية (1950-1953) انتهت بوقف لإطلاق النار وليس بمعاهدة سلام. ولا يزال جيشا البلدين يقفان بمواجهة بعضهما البعض على جانبي المنطقة المنزوعة السلاح التي تقسم شبه الجزيرة الكورية.
