QCB considers issuing digital currency
Al-Watan – WGOQatar Translations
Doha: A survey conducted by the Arab Monetary Fund showed that the Qatar Central Bank is exploring opportunities to issue a digital currency by conducting studies on this matter in cooperation with a number of experts.
The survey was completed by 17 Arab central banks on the requirements for issuing cryptocurrencies and their implications for the financial, banking and payment systems.
In response to a question posed by the survey: Is the central bank considering or already participating in exploring opportunities for issuing a digital currency? The Qatar Central Bank replied, “Yes.”
QCB seeks to transform payment transactions from cash (paper) tools to electronic tools, and to develop a sound infrastructure for payment, in line with the objectives of Qatar National Vision 2030, which aims for a cashless society while achieving greater financial inclusion.
There is always confusion between Bitcoin and its encrypted virtual counterparts and the digital currency that QCB is exploring to issue.
