Third Edition of QEERI’s Young Innovator Awards Invites Youth to Participate

Doha: Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) at Hamad Bin Khalifa University (HBKU) has initiated the third edition of its Young Innovator Awards Competition.

The initiative seeks to offer a platform that encourages youth to devise practical solutions to ensure environmentally responsible approaches that can be adapted into sustainable lifestyle practices.

Open to students of all national and international schools in Qatar, the competition is in line with QEERI’s mission to create awareness among the youth about Qatar’s grand challenges in general, while giving them a deeper understanding on climate change and sustainability.

This year’s topic is on: “Old problems, new solutions: the next big thing for the Energy-Water-Environment nexus?” Possible sub-themes for exploration include Water: security, reuse, management, sustainable technologies, pollution mitigation, treatment; Energy: solar energy, renewable energy, alternative fuel, biofuels; Environment: protection and prevention, risk assessment, human health impacts, environmental risk communication, urban pollution, waste minimization, wetlands, CO2 capture; material invention and innovation, nanotechnology etc. The competition is being organized as part of QEERI’s flagship forum, the International Conference on Sustainable Energy-Water-Environment Nexus in Desert Climate 2021 (ICSEWEN 21), taking place between November 22-25.

Young Innovator participants will be divided into age groups. The junior category (6-9 years) will present their ideas by drawing their solutions for more sustainable living, while the intermediate category contestants (10-13 years) are required to submit research posters. The senior category (14-17 years) will provide a research abstract and undertake project presentations. All levels begin with a preliminary round, and five finalists in each category will have the chance to showcase their entries during IC SEWEN 21.

Dr. Marc Vermeersch, Executive Director, QEERI, said: “It is heartening to see that besides scientists and environmentalists, the youth of today are becoming increasingly aware of the urgent work needed toward protecting our environment; they literally become our ambassadors in their families, in schools and in the country. The Young Innovator Awards Competition 2021 aims to inspire the youth of today – the change-makers of tomorrow – to explore and understand today’s challenges and envision and conceive practical solutions that will help not only Qatar but the region achieve its sustainability goals. QEERI is absolutely committed to promoting science and research among young people; it is a fundamental component of our mission. A competition of this nature demonstrates the endless possibilities that exist for safeguarding and making better use of our finite natural resources.”

Dilraz Kunnummal, PR, Outreach and Communications Specialist, QEERI, who manages student outreach, said: “Over the last two years, we have had over 1,200 students participate in this event. The scientific acumen and creativity we have seen, even from children as young as six years old, has been awe-inspiring. We look forward to another year of interesting research ideas and discussions from the students. We believe that learning about aspects such as climate change, energy and water conservation, and environmental protection will encourage them to take small steps towards sustainability every day, thereby slowly building a positive movement.”

The judging panel will comprise esteemed academics and business figures from the fields of energy, environment, and water research. Entries will be judged on factors such as the value of the recommendation showcased, quality, and creativity.

الدوحة: فتح معهد قطر لبحوث البيئة والطاقة بجامعة حمد بن خليفة، باب المشاركة في النسخة الثالثة من مسابقة /جوائز المبتكر الصغير/، التي توفر منصة لتشجيع الشباب على ابتكار حلول عملية لتحديات الحياة المستدامة على أن يكون آخر يوم لاستلام طلبات المشاركة يوم 31 أكتوبر الجاري.

وتتماشى المسابقة، المفتوحة لطلاب جميع المدارس الوطنية والدولية في قطر، مع رسالة المعهد الرامية إلى تعزيز الوعي بين الشباب بالتحديات الكبرى التي تواجه دولة قطر عموما، مع منحهم فهما أعمق لقضايا تغير المناخ والاستدامة.

وتقام المسابقة هذا العام تحت شعار /مشاكل قديمة وحلول جديدة: الفرصة التالية الأكبر لعلاقة الترابط بين الطاقة والمياه والبيئة/ .

وتشمل المحاور الفرعية التي يمكن استكشافها: الأمن المائي وإعادة استخدام المياه، الإدارة المائية، التكنولوجيا المائية المستدامة، تخفيف تلوث المياه، معالجة المياه، الطاقة الشمسية، مصادر الطاقة المتجددة، الوقود البديل، مصادر الوقود الحيوي، حماية البيئة ومنع تلوثها، تقييم المخاطر البيئية وآثارها على صحة الإنسان، التوعية بالمخاطر البيئية، التلوث الحضري، تقليل النفايات، الأراضي الرطبة، احتجاز ثاني أكسد الكربون، واختراع المواد وابتكارها، ثم تكنولوجيا النانو.

وسيقسم المشاركون من المبتكرين الصغار إلى فئات عمرية، حيث سيقدم المتسابقون في فئة المبتدئين /6-9 سنوات/ أفكارهم من خلال رسم حلولهم لحياة أكثر استدامة، بينما يطلب من متسابقي الفئة المتوسطة /10-13 سنة/ تقديم ملصقات بحثية. فيما ستقدم الفئة الأكبر /14-17 عاما/ ملخصا بحثيا وعروضا لمشاريعهم البحثية.

وتبدأ المنافسات في جميع المستويات بجولة أولية، وستتاح الفرصة لخمسة متسابقين نهائيين في كل فئة لعرض مشاركاتهم خلال المؤتمر العالمي لعلاقة الترابط المستدامة بين الطاقة والمياه والبيئة في المناخات الصحراوية 2021 الذي ينظمه معهد قطر لبحوث البيئة والطاقة، خلال الفترة من 22 إلى 25 نوفمبر المقبل.

وبهذه المناسبة، أوضح الدكتور مارك فيرميرش، المدير التنفيذي لمعهد قطر لبحوث البيئة والطاقة، أن شباب اليوم، إلى جانب العلماء وخبراء البيئة، باتوا أكثر وعيا بالحاجة الملحة لبذل المزيد من الجهود لحماية البيئة.

ونوه بأن مسابقة جوائز المبتكر الصغير 2021 تهدف إلى إلهام شباب اليوم وصناع التغيير في الغد لاستكشاف تحديات اليوم وفهمها وتصور الحلول العملية التي ستساعد دولة قطر والمنطقة على نطاق أوسع في تحقيق أهداف الاستدامة الخاصة بها، مشيرا إلى أن معهد قطر لبحوث البيئة والطاقة ملتزم تماما بتعزيز العلوم والبحوث بين الشباب، وأن هذا النوع من المسابقات يوضح الاحتمالات اللانهائية المتاحة لحماية مواردنا الطبيعية المحدودة والاستفادة منها بشكل أفضل.

من جانبها قالت السيدة ديلراز كونومال، مديرة البرامج التوعوية الطلابية بالمعهد “أنه على مدار العامين الماضيين، شارك أكثر من 1200 طالب في هذه المسابقة. وكانت الفطنة العلمية والإبداع، حتى من أطفال لا تتجاوز أعمارهم ست سنوات، مصدر إلهام مذهل”، معربة عن تطلعها إلى عام مليء بالأفكار البحثية الشيقة والمناقشات الثرية من الطلاب.

وأكدت أن التعرف على جوانب مثل تغير المناخ والحفاظ على الطاقة والمياه وحماية البيئة سيشجع النشء على اتخاذ خطوات صغيرة نحو تحقيق الاستدامة كل يوم، وبالتالي بناء حركة إيجابية بشكل تدريجي.

يذكر أن لجنة التحكيم تضم أكاديميين مرموقين ورجال أعمال من مجالات الطاقة والبيئة وأبحاث المياه. وستقيم المشاركات بناء على عوامل مثل قيمة التوصيات المقدمة والجودة والإبداع.
