UN call for restraint in Kazakhstan amid protests

The United Nations and the White House on Wednesday urged Kazakh authorities to show “restraint” in dealing with violent civil unrest, as the government there declared a state of emergency after protests.
The U.N. called for all parties to “exercise restraint, refrain from violence and promote dialogue.”
U.N. spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the international body was following events in the Kazakhstan “with concern.”
White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki also said the U.S. supports “calls for calm” and said protesters should be able to “express themselves peacefully,” urging the authorities “to exercise restraint.”
Kazakhstan on Wednesday declared a nationwide state of emergency after protests over a fuel price hike erupted into clashes and saw demonstrators storm government buildings.
Psaki said “crazy Russian claims” about a U.S. hand behind the mass demonstrations are “absolutely false and clearly a part of the standard Russian disinformation playbook.”
The country has been roiled by protests since the start of the year that escalated Wednesday into clashes with police.
Authorities cut internet and mobile phone access nationwide and earlier declared states of emergency in the epicenters of the rallies – financial capital Almaty and the Mangystau province – as well as in the capital Nur-Sultan, where no demonstrations have so far been reported.
The state of emergency was later extended across the entire ex-Soviet country.

نيويورك: دعت الأمم المتحدة، كافة الأطراف في كازاخستان إلى ضبط النفس، معبرة عن قلقها إزاء الأحداث التي تشهدها البلاد.
جاء ذلك في تصريحات أدلى بها ستيفان دوجاريك المتحدث باسم الأمين العام للأمم المتحدة أنطونيو غوتيريش في مؤتمر صحفي عقده بالمقر الدائم للمنظمة الدولية في نيويورك.
وقال دوجاريك:” نحن نتابع بقلق بالغ الموقف في كازاخستان ومن المهم لجميع الأطراف المنخرطة في الأحداث الجارية ضبط النفس، والإحجام عن العنف وتشجيع الحوار لمعالجة كل القضايا”.
وحول سلامة الموظفين الأمميين المتواجدين في كازاخستان أشار المتحدث إلى أن “مكتب المنظمة الدولية هناك يعمل في ظروف طبيعية ولا توجد أي تهديدات لموظفينا وهم ليسوا هدفا”.
وفي وقت سابق الأربعاء، أعلنت الحكومة الكازاخية استقالتها على خلفية الاحتجاجات التي تشهدها البلاد ضد زيادة أسعار الغاز المسال، تلاها فرض حالة الطوارئ في عدد من المدن، بينها العاصمة نور سلطان، بهدف حفظ الأمن العام.
