Qatar attaches great importance to preserve biological diversity

DOHA: Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Municipality and Environment yesterday marked the International Day for Biological Diversity which falls on May 22 under the slogan “Protecting Life on Earth”.

This year’s celebration coincides with the 25th anniversary of the Convention on Biological Diversity Adopted on May 22, 1992, with the aim of highlighting the achievements of States in the area of biodiversity protection.

The Ministry of Municipality and Environment emphasized that Qatar attaches great importance to the protection and preservation of biological diversity as a natural living capital supporting economic growth and its contribution to the preservation of the natural vital system in terms of availability of water, food and energy to live and stay on earth for all living things as well as ability to adapt to environmental disturbances such as climate change and others, said a statement.

The Ministry noted the important role that Qatar plays along with the countries of the world by working together to preserve biodiversity through the ratification of international and regional conventions in this regard.

The most important of these are the International Biodiversity Convention since 1996, The Convention on Combating Desertification in 1999, the International Convention on the Regulation of Traffic in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna (CITES) in 2001, the Regional Convention on the Protection of Wildlife of the Gulf Cooperation Council States in 2004 and the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in 2007. The Ministry said that Qatar has worked to implement the terms of these agreements, accurately, through the implementation of the requirements, and procedures applied on a daily basis.

Within the framework of the intensive efforts in the field of biodiversity protection, the Ministry said that in coordination with the competent authorities, it has implemented a number of measures for the prosperity of the marine environment and the protection of marine biodiversity, including the inclusion of new reef sites within environmental protection, or the transfer of new coral reefs or the landing of artificial reefs.

The Ministry has over the past year the removed artificial reefs, the transfer and cultivation of 14 thousand square meters of seaweed, and 11,595 units of natural coral hard, and 500 units of soft coral reefs , as well as the transfer and re-cultivation of more than 31,600 trees of mangroves in the coastal areas.

The environmental protection efforts supervised by the Ministry and their impact on the biodiversity of the environment, has emerged on Halul Island, where the distinctive presence of fish and coral reefs, as well as includes a nature reserve and beaches for turtles nesting.

Qatar is one of the five Arab States parties to the Convention on the Suppression of International Traffic in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and among the best countries that were committed to the convention.

In order to develop laws on biodiversity, the Ministry of Municipality and the Environment has adopted laws to protect wildlife and natural habitats to serve the country’s biodiversity.

احتفلت دولة قطر ممثلة في وزارة البلدية والبيئة باليوم الدولي للتنوع البيولوجي الذي يصادف 22 مايو كل عام، ويحتفى به تحت شعار “حماية الحياة على الأرض”، حيث يتزامن احتفال هذه السنة مع مرور 25 عاماً على اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي التي تم اعتمادها في 22 مايو عام 1992، بهدف تسليط الضوء على الإنجازات التي حققتها الدول في مجال حماية التنوع البيولوجي.

وأكدت وزارة البلدية والبيئة أن دولة قطر تولي أهمية كبيرة لحماية التنوع الحيوي والحفاظ عليه، كونه رأس المال الطبيعي الحي الداعم للنمو الاقتصادي، ولإسهامه في المحافظة على النظام الحيوي الطبيعي من حيث توافر المياه والغذاء والطاقة للعيش والبقاء على الأرض بالنسبة لجميع الكائنات الحية، وللحفاظ أيضاً على قدرة التكيف مع الاضطرابات البيئية كالتغير المناخي وغيرها.

ونوهت الوزارة ،في بيان لها بهذه المناسبة، بالدور المهم الذي تضطلع به دولة قطر مع دول العالم من خلال العمل المشترك للحفاظ على التنوع الحيوي، وذلك بالمصادقة على الاتفاقيات الدولية والإقليمية بهذا الشأن، ومن أهمها، الاتفاقية الدولية للتنوع الحيوي منذ عام 1996، والاتفاقية الدولية لمكافحة التصحر عام 1999، والاتفاقية الدولية الخاصة بتنظيم الاتجار بالكائنات الفطرية المهددة بالانقراض (CITES) عام 2001، والاتفاقية الإقليمية الخاصة بحماية الحياة الفطرية لدول مجلس التعاون لدول الخليج العربية عام 2004، وكذلك بروتوكول قرطاجنة الدولي للسلامة الإحيائية عام 2007.

وقالت الوزارة إن دولة قطر عملت على تطبيق بنود هذه الاتفاقيات، بشكل دقيق، عبر تنفيذ متطلباتها، من خلال إجراءات تنفيذية يتم تطبيقها بشكل يومي، مشيرة في سياق متصل إلى أن قطر وضعت عام 2004، الإستراتيجية الوطنية الأولى للتنوع الحيوي، والتي تم تحديثها في الإستراتيجية الوطنية الثانية للفترة لتسهم في تحقيق التوازن بين مكونات التنمية المستدامة الكبيرة بالدولة، وتخفيف الضغوط الكبيرة على مكونات التنوع الحيوي، بما في ذلك النظم الحيوية والحيوانات والنباتات والفطريات.

وفي إطار الجهود المكثفة لوزارة البلدية والبيئة في مجال حماية التنوع البيولوجي، أوضح البيان أن الوزارة نفذت بالتنسيق مع الجهات المختصة، عددا من الإجراءات اللازمة لازدهار البيئة البحرية وحماية التنوع البيولوجي البحري، ومن ذلك إدراج مواقع جديدة للشعاب المرجانية ضمن الحماية البيئية، أو نقل شعاب مرجانية جديدة أو إنزال شعاب صناعية، مبيناً في هذا الخصوص أن الوزارة قامت خلال العام الماضي بإنزال شعاب مرجانية اصطناعية، ونقل وزراعة 14 ألف متر مربع من الأعشاب البحرية، و11 ألفاً و595 وحدة من الشعاب المرجانية الطبيعية الصلبة، و500 وحدة شعاب مرجانية رخوة، فضلا عن نقل وإعادة زراعة أكثر من 31 ألفا و600 شجرة من أشجار القرم (المانجروف) بالمناطق الساحلية.
