Qatar Gains Global Recognition by Winning IMO Council Membership

Doha: In its editorial Saturday, Al-Raya daily affirmed that the State of Qatar’s has gained a new global appreciation for its role on the regional and international arenas by winning a Category C membership of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council in the elections held during the 32nd Session of the IMO Assembly at IMO headquarters in London, amid commendation of the Member States for the capabilities of the State of Qatar to perform an effective role to enhance the work of the global maritime system and to contribute to stimulating global maritime trade.

The newspaper pointed out that Qatar’s IMO Council Membership Executive Council enhances its regional and global position in light of the important roles assigned to IMO, the United Nations agency responsible for adding safety, security and efficiency in the shipping sector, and preventing pollution from ships.

According to the latest figures, the number of member states of IMO is 171 states and three associate members.

Qatar recorded good results amongst all the candidacies alongside 40 IMO Council Member States, which reflects the extent of the confidence of the member states of the organization in the volume of work that Qatar is doing in the safety and security of maritime navigation, and the protection of the marine environment, Al Raya said, adding that the presence of the State of Qatar within the executive council of the organization enhances efforts to develop international laws and regulations in maritime navigation.

The paper pointed out that Qatar will spare no effort to support the plans and programs of the IMO to achieve its goals and principles in furtherance of the mutual interests of all member states and peoples of the world, while continuing the work process in implementing many national projects to keep pace with all developments in the transport and shipping sector, which is one of the most advanced fields and industries in the world.

Al-Raya noted that Qatar has developed in the navigation and maritime transport sector in line with the rapid international maritime developments, within the framework of the Ministry’s strategic plan, which aims to ensure safe maritime navigation that meets all the conditions of maritime safety.

In conclusion, Al Raya said that Qatar appreciates the efforts of the IMO to ensure the safety and security of maritime navigation and the protection of the marine environment, and affirms the continued commitment to cooperate with the organization to achieve its goals and principles.

الدوحة: أكدت صحيفة /الراية/، في افتتاحيتها لعدد الأمس، أن دولة قطر نالت تقديرا عالميا جديدا لدورها ومكانتها على الساحتين الإقليمية والدولية بفوزها بعضوية المجلس التنفيذي للمنظمة البحرية الدولية (IMO) ضمن الفئة (C)، وذلك خلال الانتخابات التي جرت في اجتماعات الدورة الثانية والثلاثين للجمعية العمومية العادية للمنظمة والمنعقدة في لندن، وسط إشادة الدول الأعضاء بالإمكانات التي تملكها الدولة للقيام بدور فعال تجاه تعزيز عمل المنظومة البحرية الدولية، والمساهمة في تنشيط التجارة البحرية العالمية.

وأوضحت الصحيفة أن فوز قطر بعضوية المجلس التنفيذي للمنظمة البحرية الدولية، يعزز من مكانتها الإقليمية والعالمية في ضوء الأدوار المهمة المنوطة بالمنظمة البحرية الدولية، وهي وكالة الأمم المتحدة المسؤولة عن إضفاء السلامة والأمن والكفاءة على قطاع الشحن، ومنع التلوث الناجم عن السفن.

ويبلغ عدد الدول الأعضاء في المنظمة وفق آخر الأرقام، 171 دولة وثلاثة أعضاء منتسبين. ويدخل تيسير التجارة والأمن ضمن نطاق عمل المنظمة المتعلق بمعاملات التجارة العابرة للحدود.

وأشارت /الراية/ إلى أن قطر استطاعت تحقيق نتائج جيدة في الترشيحات إلى جانب الدول الأعضاء في المجلس التنفيذي وعددها 40 دولة، ما يؤكد مكانة دولة قطر وتقديرها في المحافل والمنظمات الدولية على المستويين الإقليمي والعالمي. كما يعكس مدى ثقة الدول الأعضاء في المنظمة في حجم العمل الذي تبذله قطر في سلامة وأمن الملاحة البحرية، وحماية البيئة البحرية، منوهة إلى أن تواجد دولة قطر ضمن المجلس التنفيذي للمنظمة، يعزز من الجهود الرامية إلى تطوير القوانين والأنظمة الدولية الخاصة في الملاحة البحرية، بما يدعم عجلة نمو التجارة العالمية.

ولفتت إلى أن قطر وكعادتها، لن تألو جهدا في دعم خطط وبرامج المنظمة البحرية الدولية لتحقيق أهدافها ومبادئها بما يحقق المصالح المشتركة لكافة الدول الأعضاء وشعوب العالم، بينما تواصل مسيرة العمل في تنفيذ العديد من المشاريع الوطنية لمواكبة كافة تطورات قطاع النقل والشحن البحري، الذي يعد من أكثر المجالات والصناعات تقدما في العالم.

ونوهت /الراية/ إلى أنه لا يخفى ما حققته قطر من طفرات نوعية في قطاع الملاحة البحرية من تحديث وتطوير لقطاع النقل البحري بما يواكب التطورات البحرية الدولية المتسارعة، وذلك في إطار الخطة الاستراتيجية للوزارة التي تهدف إلى ضمان ملاحة بحرية آمنة تتوفر لها جميع شروط السلامة البحرية.

واختتمت الصحيفة افتتاحيتها بالتأكيد على أن دولة قطر تقدر جهود المنظمة البحرية الدولية لضمان سلامة وأمن الملاحة البحرية، وحماية البيئة البحرية، وتؤكد على مواصلة الالتزام بالتعاون مع المنظمة لتحقيق أهدافها ومبادئها.
