Space Telescope Euclid Captures Glittering Galaxies and Stars in First Images

London: The European Space Agency (ESA) announced Tuesday that the European Space Telescope Euclid has captured its first images of glittering galaxies and stars, traveling up to a million-mile journey from Earth. This is after more than 11 years of design and development.

“Spiral and elliptical galaxies, nearby and distant stars, star clusters, and much more” could be seen in the images released on Monday, even though the instruments involved captured a portion of sky smaller than the full moon, the space agency said.

Project manager Giuseppe Racca said “The fully calibrated Euclid will ultimately observe billions of galaxies to create the biggest ever 3D map of the sky.” Euclid was launched on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida on July 1 and has arrived at its destination a vantage point known as the Second Lagrange Point on a mission to shed light on two of the universes greatest mysteries: dark energy and dark matter.
The ESA called it a “milestone” which indicates the telescope will achieve its goals.

لندن: أعلنت وكالة الفضاء الأوروبية، عن التقاط التلسكوب الفضائي الأوروبي /إقليدس/ صوره الأولى للمجرات والنجوم المتلألئة، بعد أن قطع مسافة تصل إلى مليون ميل انطلاقا من الأرض. وذلك بعد أكثر من 11 عاما من تصميمه وتطويره.

وقالت وكالة الفضاء : “إن المجرات الحلزونية والبيضاوية الشكل والنجوم القريبة والبعيدة ومجموعات النجوم وأكثر من ذلك بكثير، التي تم التقاطها يمكن رؤيتها من خلال الصور، على الرغم من أن الأدوات المعنية التقطت جزءا من السماء أصغر من القمر المكتمل”.

من جهته ذكر جوزيبي راكا مدير المشروع، “سيراقب التلكسوب /إقليدس/ المعاير بالكامل لمليارات المجرات لإنشاء أكبر خريطة ثلاثية الأبعاد للسماء على الإطلاق، مؤكدا أن هذا الحدث علامة فارقة لتحقيق أهداف التلسكوب”.

يشار إلى أن مهمة /إقليدس/، الذي تم إطلاقه على صاروخ /فالكون 9/ لشركة /سبيس إكس/ من قاعدة / كيب كانافيرال/ في فلوريدا في أول يوليو الماضي، هي إلقاء الضوء على اثنين من أعظم أسرار الكون، وهما “الطاقة المظلمة ، والمادة المظلمة”.
