Qatar’s Bird and pet market lacks diversity

Doha: A number of bird shop owners in Souq Waqif said that the trade of birds and animals in Qatar lacks diversity in varieties and species, especially since it is based on a few species with only 10 species such as ornamental birds, parrots, cats, dogs, rabbits, turtles and some reptile species.

They pointed out that the reason for the lack of this diversity is due to the strict measures set by the concerned authorities regarding the ban on importing birds from most countries of the world, as well as limiting a few species of birds and animals that are allowed in.

They noted that Qatar is the only country that sets harsh and strict conditions on the import of birds and pets, compared to neighboring countries that, years ago, opened the way for traders to import a large number of birds and animals.

They stressed that visitors to the animal and bird markets in these countries see different types of animals, unlike Qatar, where a few species are sold that do not meet the wishes of most customers

They said: “The sales volume in the market is weak, and currently visits are limited to citizens, residents and tourists who walk around with their children to watch birds and pets”.

الدوحة: أكّد عددٌ من أصحاب محال الطيور في سوق واقف أنَّ تجارة الطيور والحيوانات في قطر تفتقد للتنوّع في الأصناف والأنواع، لا سيّما أنّها ترتكز على أنواع قليلة لا تتجاوز أعدادها العشرة أنواع مثل عصافير الزينة والببغاوات والقطط والكلاب والأرانب والسلاحف وبعض أنواع الزواحف.

مُشيرين إلى أنَّ السبب وراء عدم وجود هذا التنوّع يعود إلى الإجراءات المشدّدة التي تحدّدها الجهات المعنية بخصوص حظر استيراد الطيور من مُعظم دول العالم، فضلًا عن تحديد أنواع قليلة من الطيور والحيوانات التي يسمح بدخولها.

وأشاروا إلى أنَّ قطر هي الدولة الوحيدة التي تضع شروطًا قاسية ومشددة في عمليات استيراد الطيور والحيوانات الأليفة، مقارنةً بالدول المجاورة التي فتحت منذ سنوات المجال للتجار لاستيراد عددٍ كبيرٍ من الطيور والحيوانات.

مؤكّدين أنَّ الزائر لأسواق الحيوانات والطيور في تلك الدول يشاهد نوعيات مختلفة على عكس قطر التي تُباع فيها أنواع قليلة لا تلبّي رغبة مُعظم الزبائن.

وقالوا: إن حجم المبيعات في السوق ضعيف، وحاليًا تقتصر زيارته على المُواطنين والمُقيمين والسيّاح الذين يتجوّلون برفقة أطفالهم لمُشاهدة الطيور والحيوانات الأليفة.
