Qatar Museums Unveils “Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech” at Fire Station

Doha: Qatar Museums opened Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech, a mid-career retrospective of the acclaimed American artist and designer at the Fire Station’s Garage Gallery, on view until March 31, 2022.
With more than 55 works, the exhibition offers an in-depth look at Abloh’s diverse pioneering media practice that ranges from visual arts to music, fashion, architecture, and design. Figures of Speech is organized by Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, adapted for this presentation by Qatar Museums, and designed by and in collaboration with AMO.

Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech was curated by the MCA’s former James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator, Michael Darling with creative direction from Virgil Abloh, and Samir Bantal, Director of AMO (the research studio of the acclaimed architecture firm OMA). Curatorial assistance was also provided by Chanon Kenji Praepipatmongkol, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the MCA Chicago. This exhibition has been on view at the MCA Chicago (10 June 29 September 2019), the High Museum of Art Atlanta (12 Nov 2019 8 Mar 2020) and at the ICA Boston (3 July 26 September 2021).
“Linking multiple dimensions in contemporary culture, from Caravaggio to G Wagon, in one exhibition tells you the fluidity and omniscience of Virgil as a cultural figure. No discipline bastion too difficult to enter. The prototype is his weapon of choice,” explains Bantal.
Through Abloh’s own work and many collaborations, Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech shows the complex universe of fashion, music, art and design he moves in, demonstrating his ability to fluently speak the language of each discipline. Transcending the idea of a discipline, Abloh’s work, since the initial show in Chicago, has grown to a continuous broadcast of creativity. The exhibition is designed to provide an overview of the disciplines, pivotal moments, and statements of one of the most important contemporary cultural phenomena.
The Fire Station provides a unique setting for the exhibition. Two large gallery spaces give the visitors the immersive experience to feel the variety of works, while the more intimate gallery 3 puts emphasis on the theme of race in Black Gaze. The outdoor courtyard connects all galleries and places some of Abloh’s works where they belong, in the city.

الدوحة: افتتحت متاحف قطر، المعرض الاستعادي للفنان والمصمم الأمريكي فيرجيل أبلوه: “إبداع بلا حدود”، الذي يعرض أعمال الفنان خلال منتصف مسيرته الفنية، وذلك في كراج جاليري /مطافئ: مقر الفنانين/.
ويُنظم معرض “إبداعٌ بلا حدود” من قبل متحف الفن المعاصر بشيكاغو (MCA)، وقامت متاحف قطر بتجهيزه لهذا العرض بالتعاون مع إيه.إم.أو (AMO).
ويستمر المعرض حتى نهاية مارس 2022، حيث يقدم 55 عملاً فنيا، تحتوي على نظرة متعمقة حول ممارسات الوسائط الرائدة والمتنوعة للفنان أبلوه، التي تمتد من الفن البصري إلى الموسيقى، والموضة، والعمارة، والتصميم.
وتحتوي نسخة الدوحة من فيرجيل أبلوه: “إبداعٌ بلا حدود” على قطع لم يتم عرضها من قبل مثل سيارة مرسيدس الفئة جي المعدلة، وقلعة القفز القابلة للنفخ ، كما يعيد تصميم المعرض استخدام عدد من العناصر من معارض متاحف قطر السابقة، مثل اللافتات المضاءة لعرض النصوص، وشبكات الصلب التي تقلل من النفايات.
وقالت سعادة الشيخة ريم آل ثاني، نائب الرئيس التنفيذي بالوكالة للمعارض والتسويق، في متاحف قطر “يسرّ متاحف قطر افتتاح معرض إبداعٌ بلا حدود رسميا، الذي يعرض مواهب فيرجيل أبلوه الفنية عبر وسائط مختلفة”، مضيفة “نتطلع إلى استقبال أفراد المجتمع في أول معرض لأعمال الفنان في الشرق الأوسط، وذلك في إطار فعاليات قطر تبدع، أسبوعٌ من التبادل الثقافي، والحوار، والتعاون في مجالات الفن، والعمارة، والأزياء، والتصميم، والثقافة الرقمية حيث يلتقي قادة الابتكار والنجوم الصاعدون في مجال الإبداع من قطر والعالم في الدوحة في فعاليات قطر تُبدع، للمشاركة في التبادل الثقافي، والحوار، والتعاون في مجالات الفن، العمارة، والأزياء، والتصميم، والثقافة الرقمية”.
من جانبه، قال سمير بنتال مدير استوديو الأبحاث وتصميم الهويات البصرية والنشر لمكتب متروبوليتان للهندسة المعمارية الشهير وأحد المساعدين في تقييم المعرض، “من خلال ربط أبعاد متعددة في الثقافة المعاصرة، في معرض واحد، يتبين مدى انسيابية فيرجيل واتساع معرفته كشخصية ثقافية وانه يعتمد بشكل أساسي على النماذج الأولية” ، منوها بأنه من خلال عمل أبلوه الخاص والعديد من الأعمال المشتركة، يُظهر معرض فيرجيل أبلوه: “إبداعٌ بلا حدود” الجانب التفصيلي للأزياء والموسيقى والفن والتصميم الذي يتبّعه، مما يدل على قدرته على تحدث لغة هذه المجالات بطلاقة.
وأضاف أن أعمال أبلوه، تحولت منذ عرضها الأول في شيكاغو، إلى انتشارٍ مستمر للإبداع، بغض النظر عن المسارات الفنية التقليدية. وقد تم تصميم المعرض لتقديم لمحة عامة عن مجالات، وبيانات إحدى أهم الظواهر الثقافية المعاصرة، ومحاورها.
ويوفر مطافئ مكانًا فريدًا للمعرض، إذ تم تخصيص قاعتي عرض كبيرتين لتوفير تجربة غامرة للزائرين يستشعرون فيها تنوع الأعمال، بينما تركز قاعة العرض الثالثة الأصغر حجمًا على موضوع التسابق في فن البلاك ، ويربط الفناء الخارجي بين جميع قاعات العرض، ويضع بعض أعمال أبلوه الفنية في المكان الذي تنتمي إليه، ألا وهو المدينة.
يذكر أن متحف الفن المعاصر في شيكاغو، احتضن المعرض (من 10 يونيو إلى 29 سبتمبر 2019)، ومتحف أتلانتا العالي للفنون (من 12 نوفمبر 2019 إلى 8 مارس 2020)، وفي معهد الفن المعاصر (ICA) ببوسطن (من 3 يوليو حتى يوم 26 سبتمبر 2021). ويُقام معرض فيرجيل أبلوه: “إبداعٌ بلا حدود” ضمن فعاليات العام الثقافي /قطر- أمريكا 2021 /.
