Qatar Secures Top Spot as the Most Peaceful Nation in the MENA

Doha: Qatar has once again secured its position as the most peaceful country in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, according to the 17th edition of the Global Peace Index (GPI) in 2023. This prestigious ranking, produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), evaluates 163 independent states and territories based on their level of peacefulness across three key domains: Societal Safety and Security, Ongoing Domestic and International Conflict, and Militarisation.

Claiming the 21st spot globally, Qatar has shown remarkable progress by ascending two positions from last year’s rankings. Since 2008, Qatar has consistently held the title of the most peaceful country in the MENA region and stands as the sole representative in the top 25 most peaceful countries worldwide, a testament to its unwavering commitment to peace and stability.

The GPI report highlights the factors contributing to Qatar’s improved peacefulness in 2023. Notably, the nation experienced enhanced political stability resulting from the restoration of diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain, and Egypt in 2021. Throughout 2022, these relations have remained stable, paving the way for an overall improvement in political stability for Qatar. Additionally, progress in external conflicts fought and increased United Nations (UN) peacekeeping funding has further solidified Qatar’s peaceful standing.

In the MENA region, Kuwait secured the second position in the regional rankings, placing 35th globally. Oman, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) also demonstrated their commitment to peace by securing positions in the top five. Meanwhile, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria, Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia rounded out the top ten, indicating a collective effort towards fostering peace in the region. Regrettably, Yemen ranked as the least peaceful country in the MENA region, reminding us of the ongoing challenges faced by some nations.

While Europe emerged as the most peaceful region globally, housing seven out of the top ten most peaceful countries, the Asia Pacific region claimed the other three spots. Despite the MENA region experiencing the most significant improvement in peace, it remains the least peaceful region overall, harboring four of the ten least peaceful countries.

Iceland continues to dominate the index as the world’s most peaceful country, closely followed by Denmark, which displaced Ireland for the second spot. New Zealand climbed two places to secure the fourth position, while Austria dropped to fifth. Singapore, with a remarkable jump of four places, now ranks sixth. Portugal, Slovenia, Japan, and Switzerland round off the top ten countries globally.

The GPI results indicate that over the past year, 84 countries demonstrated improvement in their peacefulness, while 79 countries recorded a decline. Unfortunately, the average country score deteriorated by five percent over the last 15 years, highlighting the pressing need for sustained efforts to promote peace worldwide.

Qatar’s consistent ranking as the most peaceful country in the MENA region serves as an inspiration for other nations to prioritize peace, diplomacy, and stability. As Qatar continues to spearhead regional initiatives, its commitment to fostering peace both domestically and internationally sets an example for the world to follow.

أشار تقرير مؤشر السلام العالمي إلى العوامل التي ساهمت في تحسين سلمية قطر في عام 2023. ومن بين هذه العوامل، تميز استقرارها السياسي الذي نتج عن استعادة العلاقات الدبلوماسية مع المملكة العربية السعودية والإمارات العربية المتحدة والبحرين ومصر في عام 2021. واستمرت هذه العلاقات في التحسن على مدار عام 2022، مما ساهم في تحسين استقرار الوضع السياسي الداخلي في قطر. بالإضافة إلى ذلك، ساهم تقدم قطر في مجال النزاعات الخارجية وزيادة تمويل حفظ السلام من قبل الأمم المتحدة في تعزيز مكانتها السلمية.

في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا، احتلت الكويت المركز الثاني في التصنيف الإقليمي، والمركز 35 على مستوى العالم. وأظهرت عمان والأردن والإمارات العربية المتحدة التزامها بالسلام من خلال تحقيقها مراكز في الخمسة الأوائل أيضًا. وفيما يتعلق بالدول العشر الأكثر سلامًا، شملت القائمة تونس والمغرب والجزائر والبحرين والمملكة العربية السعودية.

أما اليمن، فكانت الدولة الأقل سلامًا في منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا.

وفيما يتعلق بالتصنيف الإقليمي العالمي، جاءت أوروبا في المقدمة كأكثر منطقة سلمية على مستوى العالم، حيث تحتضن سبعة من أصل العشرة دول الأكثر سلمًا. أما الدول الثلاث المتبقية، فتتواجد في منطقة آسيا والمحيط الهادئ. وعلى الرغم من تحقيق منطقة الشرق الأوسط وشمال أفريقيا أكبر تحسن في السلام، إلا أنها لا تزال أقل منطقة سلمية على مستوى العالم، حيث تضم أربعة من بين الدول العشر الأقل سلمًا.

تواصل آيسلندا تصدر القائمة كأكثر دولة سلمية في العالم، في حين احتلت الدنمارك المركز الثاني، متجاوزةً أيرلندا. وصعدت نيوزيلندا مركزين لتحتل المركز الرابع، في حين انخفضت النمسا إلى المركز الخامس. ومن جانبها، ارتفعت سنغافورة أربعة مراكز لتصل إلى المركز السادس. واكتملت قائمة أعلى عشر دول في العالم من حيث السلام بوجود البرتغال وسلوفينيا واليابان وسويسرا.

وأظهرت نتائج مؤشر السلام العالمي أن 84 دولة سجلت تحسنًا في سلميتها خلال العام الماضي، في حين شهدت 79 دولة تدهورًا في سلميتها. ومن المؤسف أن متوسط ​​نتيجة البلدان تدهور بنسبة 5٪ على مدى الـ15 سنة الماضية، مما يؤكد ضرورة بذل جهود مستمرة لتعزيز السلام في جميع أنحاء العالم.
