Global Covid-19 death toll surpasses 5 million

More than 5 million people have died worldwide from the Coronavirus – COVID-19 – since the outbreak of the disease was reported by the World Health Organization in China at the end of December 2019 until now.

This census takes into account the deaths recorded by the national health authorities, but it represents only a part of the deaths actually related to the Coronavirus, according to a census prepared by AFP, Monday, based on official figures.

The World Health Organization says that given the increasing deaths linked to Covid-19 directly and indirectly, the actual pandemic toll could be two to three times higher than that officially recorded.

While the number of daily deaths around the world decreased, for the first time in nearly a year, to less than 8,000 at the beginning of October, the situation is uneven between continents.

The European continent is witnessing a rise in the number of infections and deaths, and WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, stated in a press conference last Thursday that the total number of infections and deaths due to Covid-19 is increasing for the first time in two months, and this is due to the current rise (of cases) in Europe, which exceeds the decrease observed in other regions of the world.

In Russia in particular, more than a thousand people have died on an average of daily basis as a result of Covid-19, since October 20, according to official figures.

Ukraine and Romania, after Russia, are currently the two countries in Europe that recorded the largest number of daily deaths, with 546 and 442 deaths per day on average during the past seven days, respectively.

Latin America and the Caribbean are the region most affected by the world’s pandemic in terms of the number of deaths (1,521,193 since the beginning of the spread of the virus), but the daily death toll, which currently stands at around 840, has been declining since May 2021.

In the United States, more than 1,400 deaths were recorded per day on average over the past seven days, which is 15% less than the previous week.

With a total of 746,747 deaths, the United States is the country most affected by the pandemic.

In Asia, where the epidemic began at the end of 2019, China was the first country to control the epidemic widely, as of the spring of 2020, after adopting a series of very strict restrictions, including the almost complete closure of borders.

In Africa, WHO warned last week that only five countries (Seychelles, Mauritius, Morocco, Tunisia and Cape Verde) will meet the global target of vaccinating 40% of the population by the end of the year.

توفي أكثر من 5 ملايين شخص في جميع أنحاء العالم بسبب فيروس كورونا – كوفيد-19 – منذ أن أبلغ مكتب منظمة الصحة العالمية في الصين عن ظهور المرض نهاية ديسمبر 2019 إلى الآن.

ويأخذ هذا التعداد في الاعتبار الوفيات التي سجلتها السلطات الصحية الوطنية، لكنه لا يمثل سوى جزء من الوفيات المرتبطة فعليا بفيروس كورونا، وفقًا لإحصاء أعدته وكالة فرانس برس أمس الإثنين استنادا إلى أرقام رسمية.

وتقول منظمة الصحة العالمية إنه بالنظر إلى الوفيات الزائدة المرتبطة بكوفيد-19 بشكل مباشر وغير مباشر، فإن الحصيلة الفعلية للجائحة يمكن أن تكون أعلى بمرتين إلى ثلاث مرات من تلك المسجلة رسميا.

وفي وقت انخفض عدد الوفيات اليومية في جميع أنحاء العالم، للمرة الأولى منذ قرابة العام إلى أقل من 8 آلاف في بداية أكتوبر، فإن الوضع متفاوت بين القارات.

فتشهد القارة الأوروبية ارتفاعاً في عدد الإصابات والوفيات، وأفاد المدير العام لمنظمة الصحة العالمية تيدروس أدهانوم غيبريسوس في مؤتمر صحافي الخميس الماضي بأن العدد الإجمالي للإصابات والوفيات بكوفيد-19 يتزايد للمرة الأولى منذ شهرين، ويعود ذلك إلى الارتفاع الحالي (للحالات) في أوروبا والذي يفوق الانخفاض الذي لوحظ في مناطق أخرى من العالم.

وفي روسيا خصوصا، يموت أكثر من ألف شخص يوميا في المتوسط جراء كوفيد، منذ 20 أكتوبر، حسب الأرقام الرسمية.

وتُعد أوكرانيا ورومانيا بعد روسيا حاليا الدولتين في أوروبا اللتين تسجلان أكبر عدد من الوفيات اليومية، إذ أحصيت فيهما على التوالي 546 و442 حالة وفاة يوميا في المتوسط خلال الأيام السبعة الماضية.

أما أميركا اللاتينية والبحر الكاريبي فهي المنطقة الأكثر تأثراً بالجائحة في العالم من حيث عدد الوفيات (1.521.193 حالة وفاة منذ بداية انتشار الفيروس). لكن عدد الوفيات اليومية الذي يبلغ حاليا حوالى 840، آخِذ في الانخفاض منذ مايو 2021.

وفي الولايات المتحدة، سُجلت أكثر من 1400 حالة وفاة يوميا في المتوسط خلال الأيام السبعة الماضية، وهو رقم أقل بنسبة 15% مقارنة بالأسبوع السابق.

ومع إحصائها 746.747 وفاة في المجموع، تُعتبر الولايات المتحدة البلد الأكثر تضررا بالجائحة.

وفي آسيا، كانت الصين التي انطلق منها الوباء نهاية العام 2019 أول بلد يسيطر بشكل واسع على الجائحة اعتبارا من ربيع العام 2020 بعد اعتماد سلسلة من القيود الصارمة جدا من بينها اغلاق الحدود بشكل شبه كامل.

وعلى صعيد إفريقيا، حذرت منظمة الصحة العالمية الأسبوع الماضي، أن وحدها خمس دول (سيشيل وجزر موريشيوس والمغب وتونس والرأس الأخضر) ستحقق الهدف المحدد على الصعيد العالمي المتمثل بتلقيح 40 % من السكان بحلول نهاية السنة.
