President Biden Says US was Committed to Defend Taiwan

Washington: US President Joe Biden said Thursday the US was committed to coming to Taiwan’s defense if it comes under attack from China — a stance that seems in opposition to America’s stated policy of “strategic ambiguity.”
Asked twice during CNN’s town hall whether the US would protect Taiwan if China attacked, Biden said it would.
“Yes, we have a commitment to do that,” he was quoted by the CNN as saying.
Biden has made similar statements in the past, only to have the White House say longstanding US policy had not changed toward the island. The US provides Taiwan defensive weapons, but has remained intentionally ambiguous on whether it would intervene militarily in the event of a Chinese attack.
Under the “One China” Policy, the US acknowledges China’s claim of sovereignty over Taiwan. In recent weeks, Beijing has sent dozens of warplanes near into Taiwan’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ), and Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that “reunification” between China and Taiwan was inevitable.
For its part, Al Watan newspaper indicated that the State of Qatar and the United Kingdom announced their intention to launch an annual bilateral strategic dialogue, and agreed to hold the first meeting in London in the first quarter of 2022. This came in the wake of the meeting that took place yesterday in Doha between HE the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani and HE Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs of the United Kingdom Liz Truss.
Al Watan noted that the statement said the Strategic Dialogue highlights the strength of their bilateral relationship and the mutually beneficial opportunities for the peoples of both countries to deepen cooperation. It also highlighted that The State of Qatar and the United Kingdom are mutual partners in developing closer trade and investment, defence and security, technology, counterterrorism cooperation, public health, the climate change crisis, energy, culture, sport and education promoting peace and security with friends and allies around the globe. This includes infrastructure and investment for the developing world.

واشنطن: أكد الرئيس الأمريكي جو بايدن أن الولايات المتحدة ستدافع عن تايوان وتقف إلى جانبها إذا ما شنت الصين هجوما على الجزيرة التي تعتبرها جزءا لا يتجزأ من أراضيها.
وقال بايدن في لقاء مع ناخبين في /بالتيمور/ نظمته شبكة /سي إن إن/ الإخبارية الأمريكية ردا على سؤال عما إذا كانت الولايات المتحدة مستعدة للدفاع عسكريا عن تايوان في حال تعرضت الجزيرة لهجوم صيني فأجاب “أجل. لدينا التزام بهذا الشأن”.
وأضاف أن “الصين وروسيا وبقية العالم يعلمون أن لدينا أقوى جيش في تاريخ العالم.. لا داعي للقلق بشأن ما إذا كانوا سيزيدون قوة.. ما يجب القلق بشأنه هو ما إذا كانوا سيشاركون أو لا في أنشطة من شأنها أن تضعهم في موقف قد يرتكبون فيه خطأ فادحا”.
وتابع “لا أريد حربا باردة مع الصين.. أريد فقط أن تدرك الصين أننا لن نتراجع وأننا لن نغير أيا من وجهات نظرنا”.
يشار إلى أن جزيرة تايوان، الواقعة في شرق آسيا قبالة سواحل الصين، تعتبر من أكثر القضايا حساسية بالنسبة لبكين التي تعتبرها جزءا لا يتجزأ من دولة الصين الكبرى، وترفض أي محاولة أو تصرف انفصالي يرمي إلى استقلالها.
