Trump suspends funding to World Health Organization

Washington – US President Donald Trump decided to suspend funding to the World Health Organization, accusing the global health body of “severely mismanaging” the coronavirus pandemic.

The President said that hundreds of millions of dollars in US funding would be suspended while a review was conducted to assess the WHOs “role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus”. He also criticized the organizations relationship with China.

“American taxpayers provide between $400m and $500m per year to the WHO, in contrast China contributes roughly $40m a year, even less,” Trump said. “As the organizations leading sponsor, the United States has a duty to insist on full accountability”.

“The reality is that the WHO failed to adequately obtain, vet and share information in a timely and transparent fashion,” he added.

The move follows weeks of Trumps escalating attacks on the U.N. health organization as he has sought to deflect scrutiny of his own administration’s slow response to the outbreak.

The US, where almost 26,000 people have died from COVID-19, is the largest single contributor to the WHO.

It gives the body about $500 million each year, with $116 million mandated by the UN and about another $400 million in voluntary payments.

أعلن الرئيس الأمريكي دونالد ترمب أنّه أمر إدارته بأن تعلّق دفع المساهمة المالية للولايات المتحدة في منظّمة الصحة العالمية بسبب “سوء إدارة” المنظمة الأممية لأزمة تفشّي فيروس كورونا الجديد. وقال ترمب خلال مؤتمره الصحافي اليومي في البيت الأبيض بشأن تطوّرات وباء كوفيد-19 في البلاد “إنني اليوم آمر بتعليق تمويل منظّمة الصحة العالمية في الوقت الذي يتم فيه إجراء مراجعة لتقييم دور منظمة الصحة العالمية في سوء الإدارة الشديد والتعتيم على تفشّي فيروس كورونا الجديد”.

ووجّه الرئيس الأمريكي لائحة اتّهام مطوّلة إلى المنظّمة الأممية، قال إنّ “العالم تلقّى الكثير من المعلومات الخاطئة حول انتقال العدوى والوفيات” الناجمة عن الوباء.
