“ذكريات” لوحات تواكب التطور الحضاري في قطر
DOHA: “Moments,” an exhibition decades in the making, vividly captures the amazing evolution of Qatar’s cultural and architectural landscape seen through the eyes of English artist Rosemary Morrell Winter, who has lived in Qatar in the past 45 years.
Visitors to the launch of the show at Katara Art Centre on Tuesday were filled with a sense of wonder looking at the 17 acrylic paintings on display which vividly depict the changing landscape of the country with varied subjects from scenes of life and urbanization to beaches and deserts to animals and dhows.
The exhibition offers a unique vista of Qatar from the perspective of a longtime resident who has fallen in love with the country and its people. In 1973, Rosemary moved to Qatar along with her husband and four young children.
“I love it here, from the moment I arrived,” the artist told The Peninsula on her stay in Qatar, adding people are friendly especially back in the day.
Born in the village of Beaulieu in southern England in 1940, she earned a national Diploma of Design in painting an lithography from the Bath Academy of Art. She continued her passion for painting when she moved to Qatar.
“I started painting very soon after I arrived once the children grew up. I suppose late 70’s and early 80’s,” she recalls.
In this exhibition, the artist showcases her interesting take on the country’s fast-changing urban landscape. She said she finds the paintings she is creating now amusing with the high-rise buildings, more lights and abundant greenery around.
“When I first arrived, there were no trees on the Corniche or very little lighting; things that happened here are incredible,” she said.
The oldest work on display depicts a traditional market scene Rosemary painted 27 years ago.
Dr. Cecilia Burtica, curator of the exhibition, said, “During the many years she spent in painting the contemporary Qatari scene, the artist plays the role of a historian showing us the Qatar of the past and the present, the old and the new. The paintings become a historic testimony of the beautiful architecture of the past and the flamboyant buildings of today.”
The artist shows utter loyalty to the reality of her subjects through her style and expression of the structure of her compositions which makes the viewer feel as if he were a part of the canvas.
“Without interruption, without any change in style, Rosemary has remained faithful for 40 years in her Qatari subject matter which she continues to develop today in all its splendor,” said Burtica.
The exhibition, officially launched by Ahmed Al Sayyed, Assistant General Manager at Katara, is open until April 30.

تنوعت لوحات المعرض الذي افتتح بكتارا تحت عنوان “ذكريات” للفنانة البريطانية روزماري موريل ونتر، الغنية بالرسومات الزيتية على القماش والأكريليك والتي تعكس مشاهد الحياة ومدى التطور في دولة قطر، كما ركزت أيضا على الشواطئ والموانئ القديمة، و الحيوانات البرية بالإضافة إلى أنواع كثيرة من المحامل التقليدية.
حضر الافتتاح السيد خالد السيد نائب المدير العام لشؤون العمليات بكتارا و عدد من المهتمين والفنانين في قطر.
وعن معرضها الذي يستمر حتى 28 الجاري، قالت روزماري إن هذا أول معرض شخصي لي حيث اعتدت أن أرسم لوحات مما أراه حولي من مشاهد وأحتفظ بها، مبينة أن طول فترة إقامتها في قطر منذ العام 1973 منحتها فرصة أكبر لمواكبة التطور العمراني والحضاري في البلاد.
وأشارت إلى أنها دمجت في لوحاتها الحداثة والتراث، فبعض لوحاتها تحتوي على مشاهد ومبان تقليدية قديمة والزي القطري الفلكلوري الذي كان أكثر شيوعا فيما مضى. وأضافت قولها : عرضت بعض لوحاتي في لندن وقد لاقت رواجا واهتماما من الكثيرين هناك،. وهي تعتقد بأن الفن هو أفضل وسيلة لعكس واقع الحياة في قطر للجمهور الغربي.
وترى أن الاهتمام بالفن في قطر ازداد بشكل كبير خاصة في الآونة الأخيرة فهي تنظر لجهود المؤسسات المحلية من خلال استقطاب الفنانين من حول العالم وافتتاح معارض دولية للفن، وهو ما يسهم في إثراء المشهد الثقافي في قطر، وتنوع الذائقة الفنية وقدمت شكرها للقائمين على كتارا، وذلك لدعمهم الفنانين من مختلف الجنسيات والمدارس الفنية.
