A plan to protect manatees in Qatari Coasts (its second-largest gathering place)

Doha: “Manatees are a culturally important marine mammal in Qatar, as well as an important component of seaweed communities, and an integral part of health and seaweed biodiversity”, said Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Abdullah, Head of Aquaculture Department at the Fisheries Department.
“Manatees in Qatar and the Arabian Gulf are among the important living creatures for their abundant and unique numbers in relation to the number of manatees in the world, and the coasts of Qatar are home to the second largest manatee population after Australia,” Al-Abdullah said in exclusive statements to Al-Raya.
“Manatees are considered an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), as they are found in the Arabian Gulf, especially around the Qatar peninsula, and is the largest gathering in the northwest region and larger than Australia, with an estimated 7,000 animals, and it is believed that there may be 2,000-3,000 in Qatari waters on Qatar’s west coast in particular.” He added.
He said: The Ministry of Municipality has established the National Advisory Committee for the Sustainability of Marine Biodiversity, which includes in its membership all partners interested in the marine environment from universities, the oil sector and international organizations, whose tasks include: Proposing laws and legislation for the protection of migratory marine life in accordance with international legislation in this regard.
He said: One of the commission’s tasks is to preserve and protect the marine environments in which the manatees are located, to identify areas as nature reserves for these living creatures in addition to developing a plan for the conservation and management of manatees within the State of Qatar.

الدوحة: قال محمد محمود العبدالله، رئيس قسم الاستزراع السمكي بإدارة الثروة السمكيّة: إن أبقار البحر تعدّ من الثدييات البحرية المهمة ثقافيًا في قطر، فضلًا على أنها من المكوّنات المهمة لمجتمعات الأعشاب البحرية، وهي جزء لا يتجزأ من التنوّع البيولوجي للصحة والأعشاب البحريّة.
وقال العبدالله في تصريحات خاصة ل الراية: إن أبقار البحر في قطر والخليج العربي تعدّ من الأحياء المهمّة بالنسبة لأعدادها الوفيرة والفريدة بالنسبة لتعداد أبقار البحر في العالم، و تعد سواحل قطر موطنًا لثناني أكبر تجمع لحيوانات أبقار البحر في العالم بعد أستراليا.
وأضاف: يعتبر بقر البحر من الأنواع المُهدّدة بالانقراض من قِبل الاتحاد الدولي لحماية البيئة IUCN حيث يتواجد في الخليج العربي وبالأخص حول شبه جزيرة قطر، ويعتبر أكبر تجمّع في المنطقة الشمالية الغربية وأكبر من أستراليا، حيث يقدر عددها بحوالي 7000 حيوان، ويعتقد أنه قد يكون هناك 2000-3000 في المياه القطرية على الساحل الغربي لقطر على وجه الخصوص.
وقال: إن وزارة البلدية قامت بإنشاء اللجنة الوطنية الاستشارية لاستدامة التنوّع الحيوي البحري، التي تضم في عضويتها جميع الشركاء المُهتمين بالبيئة البحريّة من الجامعات والقطاع النفطي والمنظمات الدوليّة التي من مهامها: اقتراح القوانين والتشريعات الخاصّة بحماية الأحياء البحريّة المُهاجرة وبما يتوافق مع التشريعات الدوليّة بهذا الشأن.
وقال: إن من مهام اللجنة صون وحماية البيئات البحريّة المتواجدة بها أبقار البحر، وتحديد مناطق كمحميات طبيعيّة لهذه الأحياء بالإضافة إلى وضع خُطة للحفاظ على أبقار البحر وإدارتها داخل دولة قطر.
