Doha: A British study has shown that there is no harm in receiving COVID-19 and the flu vaccines at the same time.
The study, led by the University of Bristol and scheduled to be published in the Lancet, said that receiving the vaccines does not adversely affect the immune response produced by either of them, and that the reported side effects were usually mild to moderate in tests conducted with three flu vaccines with any dose of Covid-19 vaccines, either produced by Pfizer or AstraZeneca, Reuters reported.
“This is a really positive step that could mean reducing appointments for those in need of the two vaccines,” said lead researcher Rajika Lazarus, adding: “The results of this study have been submitted to the Joint Vaccination and Immunization Committee for consideration and will help policymakers plan for the future of these important vaccination programmes.”
Doses were given on the same day in both arms.
One group received two doses, Covid vaccine and the other of the flu vaccine on the first visit, with a placebo on the second visit, and another received covid-19 vaccine and placebo on the same day, followed by the flu vaccine on the second day.
The study on 679 volunteers in 12 locations across England and Wales found that 97% of participants said they were ready to get two vaccines on the same date in the future.
Britain and other northern hemisphere countries are preparing for a difficult winter as flu cases are likely to increase as covid-19 restrictions are relaxed and social distancing measures relaxed.
