Tea, coffee and rice are important part of our daily lives and the food of billions around the world. But does anyone imagine losing them suddenly and without any warning?
Plants such as coffee, cocoa, potatoes, tea, bananas and grain, many arable species, some of which are essential for the food of billions of people, suffer the effects of rising temperatures, droughts, heavy rains, new diseases or insect pests, experts say according to the German radio website.
A study, published last May, suggested that about a third of agricultural production could become out of climate areas suitable for cultivation due to global warming.
Rising sea level also threatens rice fields, leading to increased salinity in delta areas.
The International Potato Centre expects crops to decline by 32 per cent by 2060.
As for Coffee and cocoa, many studies have warned that by 2050, the area of land suitable for cultivation will decline significantly, up to 50 percent for coffee.
“The ability of these crops to adapt again to climate change or other difficulties is limited,” says Benjamin Killian of Crop Trust International.
Between 2013 and 2018, the Crop Trust collected more than 4,600 samples from 371 wild versions of 28 priority crops (such as wheat, rice, sweet potatoes, bananas, apples…). Scientist Aaron Davis and his colleagues found a wild type of coffee in Sierra Leone better than Robusta and more warming-resistant than Arabica.
“Of the 124 known coffee species, 60 per cent are endangered,” Davis says. Coffee trees are not alone involved.
For example, 70 wild plants for major crops (e.g. avocados, corn, zucchini and potatoes) are endangered in four Central American countries that are the cradle of many crops, according to a recent study.
Does everyone have to get used to dispensing coffee or chocolate from now on, and will some food become the preserve of a few?.. Some experts have not ruled that out. If consumers can adapt, millions of farmers who depend on coffee or cocoa will lose their livelihoods.

يقول خبراء – وفق موقع الإذاعة الألمانية – إن نباتات مثل البن والكاكاو والبطاطا والشاي والموز والحبوب، والكثير من الأنواع القابلة للزراعة، وبعضها ضروري لغذاء مليارات البشر، تعاني آثار ارتفاع درجات الحرارة، والجفاف، والأمطار الكثيفة، والأمراض الجديدة أو الآفات الحشرية.
دراسة، نُشرت في مايو الماضي، أشارت إلى أن منشأ نحو ثلث الإنتاج الزراعي، قد يصبح بفعل الاحترار المناخي، خارج المناطق المناخية الملائمة لزراعته.
كما أن ارتفاع مستوى سطح البحر، يهدد حقول الأرز، إذ يؤدي إلى زيادة الملوحة في مناطق الدلتا.
ويتوقع المركز الدولي للبطاطا، انخفاض المحاصيل بنسبة 32 في المائة بحلول سنة 2060.
أما البن والكاكاو، فحذرت دراسات عدة من انحسار كبير لمساحة الأراضي الملائمة لزراعتهما بحلول عام 2050، قد يصل إلى 50 في المئة فيما يتعلق بالبن.
ويقول بنجامين كيليان من مؤسسة “كروب تراست” الدولية : “قدرة هذه المحاصيل على التكيف مجدداً مع تغير المناخ أو الصعوبات الأخرى محدودة”.
وبين عامي 2013 و2018، جمعت مؤسسة “كروب تراست”، أكثر من 4600 عينة من 371 من النسخ البرية لـ28من المزروعات، ذات الأولوية (كالقمح والأرز والبطاطا الحلوة والموز والتفاح…). ووجد العالم آرون ديفيس وزملاؤه، نوعاً برياً من البن في سيراليون أفضل من روبوستا وأكثر مقاومة للاحترار من أرابيكا.
ويقول ديفيس: “من بين 124 نوعاً معروفاً من البن، ثمة 60 في المائة مهددة بالانقراض”.. وأشجار البن ليست وحدها المعنية.
فعلى سبيل المثال، ثمة 70 من النباتات البرية لمحاصيل رئيسية (كالأفوكادو والذرة والكوسا والبطاطا) مهددة بالانقراض في أربعة من بلدان أميركا الوسطى التي تعتبر مهداً للكثير من الزراعات، وفقاً لدراسة حديثة.
هل بات على الجميع من الآن فصاعداً التعود على الاستغناء عن القهوة أو الشوكولا، وهل ستصبح بعض المواد الغذائية بالتالي حكراً على قلة؟.. لم يستبعد بعض الخبراء ذلك. وإذا كان في استطاعة المستهلكين أن يتكيفوا، فإن ملايين المزارعين الذين يعتمدون على البن أو الكاكاو سيفقدون مصادر رزقهم.
