Health officials in the southern Indian state of Kerala are working to contain the outbreak of the Nipah virus, after it killed a 12-year-old boy.
According to Russia Today, Kerala is on high alert after the death of a 12-year-old boy on Sunday, prompting health officials to start tracking contacts and isolating hundreds of people who contacted the boy.
Police also cordoned off a two-mile radius around the boy’s home.
The site stated that so far, symptoms of infection with the Nipah virus have appeared on two health workers who were in contact with the victim, and samples of eight primary contacts have been negative.
Kerala Health Minister Veena George said 12 people had contracted the Nipah virus in India.
The Nipah virus, which is not related to Covid-19 and more deadly, has caused a few outbreaks in the past two decades.. However, the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has warned of the possibility of a pandemic because of it. CDC also ranks Nipah “top of the list” of 10 priority diseases identified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as potential sources of future epidemics.
Up to three-quarters of those infected die, making the Nipah virus about 75 times more deadly than the estimated death rate for “Covid-19”.
What is the Nipah virus?
Nipah virus is a serious infection that can cause brain swelling and death.
It was discovered for the first time in 1999, in Malaysia, Singapore, when there were 100 deaths out of 300 infections.
The virus was named after a place in Port Dickson, Malaysia, where the outbreak was traced to a pig farm.
What are its symptoms?
The Nipah virus tends to start causing symptoms between four days and two weeks after exposure, but it can persist for as long as 45 days.
At first it may cause fever, headache, and sometimes respiratory symptoms such as cough, sore throat and difficulty breathing.
Patients may develop swelling of the brain, which is medically called encephalitis. It can cause drowsiness, confusion and mental disarray.
CDC says it can quickly develop into a coma within 48 hours.
Is it fatal?
Between 40% and 75% of people infected with the Nipah virus die. There is no cure for this disease yet.
Those who survive tend to be fully cured. But many suffer from brain problems or lifelong setbacks.
How does it spread?
Infections tend to occur when humans become infected with nipah virus from an animal, making it belong to the so-called animal-origin disease.
In cases of the disease, the blame was placed on contact with sick pigs (Malaysia) or by eating saliva-contaminated fruit or urine from infected bats (India)
In one outbreak in 2004, the source was most likely villagers drinking bat-contaminated date palm juice.
However, human-to-human transmission of NIPA virus has also been reported among family members and caregivers of infected patients, so it can also spread among humans. This means that it has the potential to cause a pandemic.

كما طوقت الشرطة منطقة نصف قطرها ميلين حول منزل الصبي.
وذكر الموقع أنه حتى الآن، ظهرت أعراض الإصابة بالفيروس على عاملين صحيين كانا على اتصال بالضحية، كما جاءت عينات ثماني جهات اتصال أولية سلبية.
وقالت وزيرة الصحة بولاية كيرالا فينا جورج إن 12 شخصا أصيبوا بفيروس نيباه في الهند.
وتسبب الفيروس غير المرتبط بفيروس كورونا (كوفيد-19) والأكثر فتكا بكثير منه، في عدد قليل من حالات تفشي المرض في العقدين الماضيين.. إلا أن المركز الأمريكي لمكافحة الأمراض والوقاية منها من احتمال حدوث جائحة بسببه.. كما يصنف نيباه “على رأس قائمة” عشرة أمراض ذات أولوية حددتها منظمة الصحة العالمية كمصادر محتملة للأوبئة في المستقبل.
ويموت ما يصل إلى ثلاثة أرباع المصابين، ما يجعل فيروس نيباه أكثر فتكا بنحو 75 مرة من المعدل المقدر لوفيات “كوفيد-19.
ما هو فيروس نيباه؟
فيروس نيباه هو عدوى خطيرة يمكن أن تسبب تورم المخ والوفاة.
ووقع اكتشافه لأول مرة عام 1999، في ماليزيا، سنغافورة، عندما حدثت 100 حالة وفاة من أصل 300 إصابة.
وتمت تسمية الفيروس على اسم مكان في بورت ديكسون، ماليزيا، حيث تم تتبع تفشي المرض إلى مزرعة للخنازير.
ما هي أعراضه؟
يميل فيروس نيباه إلى البدء في التسبب في الأعراض بين أربعة أيام وأسبوعين بعد التعرض له، ولكن يمكن أن يستمر لمدة 45 يوما.
وفي البداية قد يسبب الحمى والصداع، وأحيانا أعراض الجهاز التنفسي مثل السعال والتهاب الحلق وصعوبة التنفس.
وقد يصاب المرضى بتورم في المخ، والذي يسمى طبيا التهاب الدماغ. ويمكن أن يسبب النعاس والارتباك والتشوش الذهني.
وتقول مراكز السيطرة على الأمراض والوقاية منها إنه يمكن أن يتطور بسرعة إلى غيبوبة في غضون 48 ساعة.
هل هو مميت؟
يموت ما بين 40% و75% من المصابين بفيروس نيباه. ولا يوجد علاج لهذا المرض حتى الآن.
وأولئك الذين ينجون يميلون إلى الشفاء التام. لكن كثيرين يعانون من مشاكل دماغية أو انتكاسات مدى الحياة.
كيف ينتشر؟
تميل العدوى إلى الحدوث عندما يصاب البشر بفيروس نيباه من حيوان، ما يجعله ينتمي إلى ما يسمى بالمرض حيواني المنشأ.
ووقع إلقاء اللوم في حالات المرض على ملامسة الخنازير المريضة (ماليزيا) أو عن طريق تناول الفاكهة الملوثة باللعاب أو البول من الخفافيش المصابة (الهند).
وفي إحدى حالات التفشي التي حدثت في عام 2004، كان المصدر على الأرجح هو شرب القرويين لعصارة نخيل التمر الملوثة بالخفافيش.
ولكن تم الإبلاغ أيضا عن انتقال فيروس نيباه من إنسان لآخر بين أفراد الأسرة ومقدمي الرعاية للمرضى المصابين، لذلك يمكن أن ينتشر أيضا بين البشر. وهذا يعني أن لديها القدرة على التسبب في جائحة.
