Strict travel policy delayed Delta entry into Qatar: Dr. Al Khal

With many people returning to Qatar in the next three weeks following summer vacation there is a real risk that COVID-19 cases could increase during this time, particularly with the highly infectious Delta strain circulating in Qatar and many countries around the world.
“Considering this potential risk presented by returning travellers, it is risky to move to the full Phase 4,” said Dr. Abdullatif Al Khal, Chair of the National Health Strategic Group on COVID-19 and Head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation.
However, he said, the changes coming into effect from today will allow the easing of a set of restrictions throughout August. Dr. Khal in an interview, posted on Twitter account of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH), talked about easing of restrictions in the country, impact of Delta strain on COVID-19 rates and about the progress of the national vaccination program.
“The good news is that the vaccines we are administering in Qatar are highly effective at preventing infection and severe disease due to the Delta strain,” said Dr. Al Khal.
“We are all eager to get back toward normal as soon as possible, but what is most important is that we do not rush this process and jeopardize all the achievement we have made to get to where we are now,” said Dr. Al Khal.
Over the past three or four months, he said, the Delta strain has become the most dominant strain of COVID-19 in many countries around the world. “Our strict travel and return policy helped to delay the entry of the Delta strain into Qatar but it has recently begun circulating in our community.”
Dr. Al Khal said: “The Delta strain is a much more contagious strain of the virus than the strains we had previously seen in Qatar and causes more severe infection.”
He said that it is important to realise that more than one third of those infected will suffer from long lasting complications of the disease such as fatigue, chronic headache, difficulty with memory or difficulty breathing even if they get a mild infection.

وقال الدكتور عبد اللطيف الخال، رئيس المجموعة الاستراتيجية الوطنية للتصدي كوفيد-19 ورئيس قسم الأمراض المعدية في مؤسسة حمد الطبية: “بالنظر إلى هذا الخطر المحتمل الذي يحمله المسافرون العائدون، من الخطر الانتقال إلى المرحلة الرابعة بشكل كامل.
بيد انه قال ان التغييرات السارية اعتبارا من اليوم ستسمح بتخفيف مجموعة من القيود طوال اغسطس . وتحدث الدكتور الخال في مقابلة، نشرت على حساب وزارة الصحة العامة على تويتر، عن تخفيف القيود في البلاد، وتأثير سلالة دلتا على معدلات الإصابات بكوفيد-19 وعن تقدم برنامج التطعيم الوطني.
وقال الدكتور الخال: “الخبر السار هو أن اللقاحات التي نقدمها في قطر فعالة للغاية في الوقاية من العدوى والأمراض الحادة التي تسببها سلالة الدلتا”.
وقال الدكتور الخال : “نحن جميعا تواقون إلى العودة إلى الوضع الطبيعي في أقرب وقت ممكن، ولكن الأهم هو أننا لا نستعجل هذه العملية ونعرض للخطر كل الإنجازات التي حققناها للوصول إلى ما نحن عليه الآن”.
وقال انه خلال الشهور الثلاثة او الاربعة الماضية اصبحت سلالة دلتا السلالة الاكثر هيمنة من ” كوفيد – 19 ” فى العديد من الدول فى جميع انحاء العالم . “ساعدت سياستنا الصارمة للسفر والعودة على تأخير دخول سلالة دلتا إلى قطر، لكنها بدأت مؤخرا تنتشر في مجتمعنا”.
وقال الدكتور الخال: “سلالة دلتا هي سلالة أكثر عدوى من الفيروس من السلالات التي شهدناها سابقا في قطر وتسبب عدوى أكثر حدة”.
وقال إنه من المهم أن ندرك أن أكثر من ثلث المصابين سيعانون من مضاعفات طويلة الأمد للمرض مثل التعب أو الصداع المزمن أو صعوبة في الذاكرة أو صعوبة في التنفس حتى لو أصيبوا بعدوى خفيفة.
