UN Cancels In-House Meetings After Reports of COVID Cases

New York: The United Nations on Wednesday canceled all in-house meetings for this week after a UN member nation reported cases of COVID-19 among its staff.
In a message to UN member nations, President of the United Nations General Assembly Volkan Bozkir said that the United Nations medical unit recommended that in-house meetings be suspended for the rest of the week due to pending examination of five people from the African nation of Niger who were confirmed to be infected with the Coronavirus.
In addition, diplomats at the United Nations confirmed in identical statements that the international organization was operating via the Internet to a large extent after New York City, last March, became one of the global hotspots for the outbreak of the virus. However, it re-held some in-house meetings while continuing to take precautionary measures, such as requiring diplomats to wear masks, social distancing and restricting the number of attendees, before the infection of five members from of the African nation of Niger.
It is noteworthy that the members of the Niger delegation, a member of the 15-nation Security Council, had attended an in-house meeting last Thursday, and after that, all diplomats who attended that meeting were subjected to Coronavirus tests.

نيويورك: أعلنت منظمة الأمم المتحدة، إلغاء جميع الاجتماعات في مقرها بنيويورك بعد اكتشاف إصابات بفيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/ في صفوف أعضاء أحد البعثات الدبلوماسية داخله.
وقال السيد فولكان بوزكير رئيس الجمعية العامة للأمم المتحدة، في رسالة إلى الدول الأعضاء، إن الوحدة الطبية في الأمم المتحدة أوصت بإلغاء الاجتماعات الفعلية انتظارا لفحص المخالطين لخمسة أشخاص من بعثة النيجر تأكدت إصابتهم بفيروس كورونا /كوفيد-19/.
إلى ذلك، أكد دبلوماسيون بالأمم المتحدة، في تصريحات متطابقة، أن المنظمة الدولية كانت تعمل عبر الإنترنت إلى حد بعيد بعد أن صارت مدينة نيويورك في مارس الماضي إحدى بؤر تفشي الفيروس عالميا، لكنها عاودت عقد بعض الاجتماعات الفعلية مع استمرار العمل بالإجراءات الاحترازية مثل إلزام الدبلوماسيين بوضع الكمامات والتباعد الاجتماعي وتقييد عدد الحضور، وذلك قبل اكتشاف الإصابات الخمس في صفوف بعثة النيجر.
يشار إلى أن أعضاء وفد النيجر، العضو في مجلس الأمن الدولي المكون من 15 دولة، كانوا قد حضروا اجتماعا فعليا للمجلس يوم الخميس الماضي، وعقب ذلك أخضع جميع الدبلوماسيين الذين حضروا ذلك الاجتماع لفحوص كورونا.
