USA: Two girls steal their father’s car to “swim with dolphins”

Two parents in America were in shock after discovering that their two girls had stolen their car and drove 16 kilometres before crashing with another car and then a truck, and U.S. media reported that the girls had done so to “swim with dolphins”.
The British newspaper The Times reported Friday, June 4, 2021, that the sisters, aged 9 and 4, took the keys to the Chevrolet Malibu last Wednesday morning and sneaked out the basement of their family’s home in Salt Lake City suburbs.
The girls drove 16 km along Interstate 201 and another main road, before colliding with another car and then a truck. The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the girls were wearing seat belts, and neither of them was injured in the incident.
The truck driver called the police to report what he thought was a driver in trouble who collided with another car. When he followed this car, they crashed with his truck. The Policeman said that he was very surprised to find a 9-year-old girl behind the wheel.
Detective Scott List, of West Jordan Police, said when asking the girls, “They indicated that they planned on waking up at 3:00 a.m. to go to California and swim with dolphins and go to the beach”.
List also added that the parents, who were asleep at the time of the accident, “were terrified and shocked when they discovered the absence of their daughters”.
Police said that the parents had previously floated the idea of a trip to California, possibly prompting the girls to go on an expedition. It was not clear if they were driving at high speeds. Other drivers also reported seeing a car driving in a floppy manner.
Danielle Leblanc, a school bus driver who passed by the scene, said she was stunned to see the children driving. “The first thing I did was look for parents,” Danielle told ABC4. “Then I saw the car and the front end disappeared completely and I said, “Oh my God!” Then I looked again and saw two little girls in the front seat”.
“I was in shock, it was totally crazy,” she said.

صحيفة The Times البريطانية أوضحت في تقريرها، أمس الجمعة 4 يونيو/حزيران 2021، أن الشقيقتين اللتين تبلغان من العمر 9 و4 سنوات، أخذتا مفاتيح السيارة “شيفروليه ماليبو” صباح يوم الأربعاء الماضي وتسللتا إلى الخارج عبر قبو منزل عائلتهما في إحدى ضواحي مدينة سولت ليك.
قطعت الطفلتان مسافة 16 كم بالسيارة، على طول الطريق السريع 201 وطريق رئيسي آخر، قبل أن تصطدما بسيارة أخرى ثم بشاحنة. وذكرت صحيفة The Salt Lake Tribune أن الفتاتين كانتا ترتديان حزامي الأمان، ولم تصب أي منهما في هذا الحادث.
فيما اتصل سائق الشاحنة بالشرطة للإبلاغ عما اعتقد أنه سائق في ورطة اصطدم بسيارة أخرى. وحين تبع هذه السيارة اصطدمت بشاحنته. وقالت الشرطة إنه شعر بدهشة بالغة حين وجد فتاة تبلغ من العمر 9 سنوات خلف عجلة القيادة.
قال المحقق سكوت ليست، من شرطة ويست جوردان، إنه لدى سؤال الفتاتين “أشارتا إلى الذهاب إلى كاليفورنيا للسباحة مع الدلافين والذهاب إلى الشاطئ واستيقاظهما في الثالثة صباحاً”.
كما أضاف ليست أن الوالدين، اللذين كانا نائمين أثناء وقوع الحادث، “أصيبا بالهلع والصدمة حين اكتشفا غياب ابنتيهما”.
قالت الشرطة إن الوالدين قد طرحا في السابق فكرة رحلة إلى كاليفورنيا، وربما هذا ما دفع الفتاتين إلى الذهاب في رحلة استكشافية. ولم يتضح إن كانتا تقودان بسرعات عالية. وأفاد سائقون آخرون أيضاً برؤيتهم سيارة تسير بشكل متخبط.
تقول دانييل ليبلانك، وهي سائقة حافلة مدرسية مرّت في طريقها بموقع الحادث، إنه أصابها الذهول من رؤيتها الطفلتين تقودان السيارة. وقالت دانييل لشبكة ABC4: “أول شيء فعلته هو البحث عن الوالدين. ثم رأيت السيارة واختفت الواجهة الأمامية بالكامل وقلت: “يا إلهي!”، ثم نظرت مرة أخرى ورأيت فتاتين صغيرتين في المقعد الأمامي”.
أضافت: “كنت في حالة صدمة، فقد كان تصرفاً جنونياً بالكامل”.
