A pill a day to kill the virus: New Japanese treatment for Coronavirus

Japan’s pharmaceutical company Shionogi has begun experimenting with the first once a day medical tablet for new Coronavirus patients (Covid-19), joining Pfizer and Merck in the race to find treatments for the virus.
Osaka-based Shionogi announced that it had designed its own pills to attack the Covid-19 virus, according to an exclusive report published on its website by the Wall Street Journal.
According to the newspaper, the company said the doses would be one tablet a day, explaining that it was testing the drug and any possible side effects in trials that began this month and are likely to last until next year.
The newspaper noted that Shionogi is months behind Pfizer and Merck, which began testing the next phase of Covid-19 therapy tablets, and Pfizer said its tablets, which are taken twice a day, may be ready to go on the market as soon as this year.
The three companies aim to fill one of the biggest gaps in the fight against the epidemic, the newspaper said, and studies have shown that vaccines remain effective in preventing serious diseases from known strains of Covid-19 virus, including the highly contagious delta variant, but some do not want to get vaccinated, and epidemics can occur among those who receive vaccines.

وأعلنت شركة شيونوجي، ومقرها أوساكا، أنها صممت أقراص الدواء الخاصة بها لمهاجمة فيروس كوفيد-19، وفقا لتقرير حصري نشرته صحيفة وول ستريت جورنال الأمريكية على موقعها الإلكتروني.
ووفقا للصحيفة، قالت الشركة إن الجرعات ستكون قرصا واحدا في اليوم، موضحة أنها تختبر العقار وأي آثار جانبية محتملة في التجارب التي بدأت هذا الشهر ومن المرجح أن تستمر حتى العام المقبل.
وأشارت الصحيفة إلى أن شركة شيونوجي تتأخر بشهور عن شركتي فايزر وميرك، اللتين بدأتا اختبارات المرحلة اللاحقة من أقراص علاج كوفيد – 19، وقالت شركة فايزر إن أقراصها التي تؤخد مرتين يوميا قد تكون جاهزة لطرحها في الأسواق في أقرب وقت هذا العام.
وقالت الصحيفة إن الشركات الثلاث تهدف إلى سد واحدة من أكبر الثغرات في مكافحة الوباء، فقد أظهرت الدراسات أن اللقاحات تظل فعالة في منع الإصابة بأمراض خطيرة جراء سلالات معروفة من فيروس كوفيد – 19 بينها متغير دلتا شديد العدوى، لكن البعض لا يريدون الحصول على التطعيم، كما يمكن حدوث حالات إصابة بالوباء بين من يحصلون على اللقاحات.
